From Research student to undergraduate Teacher – Moving into research-led training

Session 1: Getting started in UG teaching – Friday 29th October 2021 10am to 1pm

In this opening session we will survey the current UK higher education landscape and examine some key pedagogical concepts to inform the design of deep and meaningful learning experiences (both face-to-face and online) for students. This interactive session will encourage you to reflect on your own experience of higher education with a view to better understanding learners in higher education. We will explore a range of practical learning activities to support experiential and enquiry-based learning, encouraging you to reflect on what excellence might look like in your own teaching practice.

Session 2: Designing Assessment for Learning – Friday 12th November 2021 10am to 1pm
This session will explore recent research on HE assessment with a view to developing your skills in designing innovative, relevant and inclusive assessment and feedback. We will consider assessment design from both student and teacher perspectives, exploring how best to design assessment for learning by drawing upon established and emerging approaches to assessment.

Session 3: Developing Your Teaching Practice – Friday 26th November 2021 10am to 1pm
This session will encourage you to explore your identity as a teacher-researcher in higher education. We will discuss the importance of adopting a growth mindset and examine how you can use a range of feedback to enhance your teaching practice. The session will conclude with a panel discussion and Q&A, where three visiting academics will discuss their own experiences of moving into teaching in higher education.

Attendee requirements

This is conceived as a series for up to 18 participants, however students who are only able to attend two of the three sessions are also welcome. Places will be awarded on a first-come first-served basis.

This series is aimed towards 2nd and 3rd year PhD students. If you are in your 1st year you can still apply, however 2nd and 3rd year students will have priority for places.
