Classical Music, Community and Participation

This project seeks to develop more understanding about diversity and inclusion in classical music. This is an interdisciplinary project drawing on theories and methods from cultural sociology, musicology, anthropology and cultural studies. The project is situated in London and is based on fieldwork and interviews. This project is being funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) via the London Arts and Humanities Partnership (LAHP).  

Caryl Mann is a PhD candidate in the Music Department at King’s College London. She completed a postgraduate at SOAS (MMus Ethnomusicology in Performance), a PGCE in Secondary Music at Goldsmiths College, and a BA (Hons) in Music and English at Cardiff University. Caryl’s career has encompassed performing, teaching music in both secondary and primary schools in London, and exhibition evaluation and audience research in the museum sector.
