Shaming and Stigma: A Study in Social Hierarchy

The central aim of my project is to advance a new descriptive and normative treatment of stigma. I argue that stigma is conceptually connected to (certain kinds of) shaming – and that a proper understanding of this relationship clues us into the right interpretation of the claim that stigma is an affront to our individuality and self-respect. I will also use these accounts to challenge some existing philosophical work on social hierarchies, like stigma, notably in the relational egalitarian movement.
