Locating 'Textility': Race, Gender and Textiles in Eleventh- and Twelfth-Century Britain

My project starts with the premise that the historic distinctions drawn between ‘Anglo-Saxon’ and ‘Romanesque’ art historical styles have obscured the continued importance of textiles and their makers in this period. In my research I therefore seek to compare eleventh- and twelfth-century embroideries to works in other media as a means of exploring the role played by English women in promoting Insular artistic traditions after the Norman Conquest. I am particularly interested in how art historical critical theories concerning gender, race and materiality may better inform our understanding of visual art in this period.
