Understanding and managing ‘Inclusion’ in Tel-Aviv’s urban space

This PhD will use space syntax, a configurational theory of space, to decode spatial relationships between urban areas and buildings. This research will fill a knowledge gap in current scholarship by combining an analysis of Tel-Aviv’s spatial layout, with a qualitative analysis of how individuals value and respond to the city’s spatial form through place attachment. This spatial and social analysis will draw on quantitative methods (space syntax) and qualitative methods (questionnaires and interviews) to relate the physical urban space of Tel-Aviv to definitions of social inclusion in order to create a workable definition of ‘inclusive’ for municipal decision makers who are seeking to implement the UN Development Programme’s 11th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11: ‘Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable’.
