Video Capture: Art and the Electronic Image in the Era of Crisis

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the arrival in the U.S. of consumer electronics from East Asia presaged both a new era of economic stagnation and a new set of aesthetic practices. Building on analyses of the relationship between media technologies and post-war socioeconomic formations, my project takes this historical confluence as a starting point to examine the conjoining of economics and aesthetics in the video image. In the context of post-1960s economic crisis, video art troubled the link between value and labour and modelled the remaking of subjectivity in relation to capital.
