Conceptualising the Bailouts: A Linguistic-Pragmatic Discourse Analysis of British Newspaper Reporting of the Eurozone Crisis (2010-2011)

Media coverage of highly complex phenomena is a prime means of affecting public opinion and debate, and has also played a key role in the recent (and on-going) euro crisis. Yet by and large, existing research has lacked a focus on one crucial aspect of the news reporting: the financial/economics terms themselves. The project will make an original contribution by investigating how this type of economics news is packaged for consumption by a mass audience, seeking triangulation across a number of different linguistic structural levels.
