Prospective Students

LAHP awards up to 90 studentships per year for postgraduate research in the arts and humanities at its eight partner higher education institutions (HEIs). LAHP funds two types of studentship: an Open award (90% of awards) and a Collaborative Doctoral Award (10% of awards).

Open competition

The Open Studentship Competition is launched in November with a deadline in late January (specific date confirmed each year). Applicants develop their proposal in discussion with a prospective supervisor. They are required to apply for a place at one of LAHP’s partner HEIs before submitting an application to LAHP. Open awards are funded for three years full-time (or part-time equivalent), with the opportunity to apply for a funded extension of up to 6 months (with the same four-year submission deadline).

Collaborative doctoral awards

Collaborative Doctoral Awards support postgraduate research in collaboration with an external partner. The CDA competition is launched in July with a deadline in mid-October (specific date confirmed each year). Prospective supervisors apply for a CDA, either with or without a nominated student. CDAs awarded without a nominated student are advertised in late November with an application deadline in late January/early February. CDAs are funded for 3.5 years, recognising the additional work involved in a collaborative studentship. CDA students are also able to apply for a funded extension of up to 6 months (with the same four-year submission deadline).
