Painters and workshops in Pompeii

My project focuses on the identification of Third Style painters working in Pompeii, achieved thanks to the analysis of their handiwork. Any recurring collaborations between them will be analysed in order to understand whether they might be interpreted as evidence for the identification of specific painter-workshops. The aim of this study is to better understand the painting process and its workforce organisation, at the same time addressing issues of patronage and commissioning. Moreover, by identifying individual workshops and attributing to them specific decorations, it will be possible to create a better model of the stylistic development of Roman wall-painting. In order to contextualize my research, wall-painting’s working practices will be compared with other crafts in Pompeii, thus approaching the topic of ancient industry from an interdisciplinary point of view.
