Timelines of Hate: Majoritarian Violence in the Age of Social Media

My doctoral research will study the relationship between militant Hinduism and social media. It aims to locate the role of social media platforms in India’s changing politics and economy, trace their use among supremacist groups for violence, and the resistance to this mobilisation by members and non-members. Exploring the role of Facebook and Whatsapp in the “world’s largest democracy,” the project aims to both identify and build theories that effectively reflect the developing worlds, where histories, politics, sensibilities and platforms’ accountability, may not mirror popular debates and scholarship about the internet.
