“Race” in Contemporary South African Photography: The Market Photo Workshop
Highlighting a striking come back of racial categorisation in contemporary South African photography, my PhD project aims to analyse the ways in which race is being addressed and represented in projects created by students or graduates from the Market Photo Workshop, a school of photography based in Johannesburg. While undertaking research in race and political rights in South African and Western literature, my project aims to question the current and changing meaning of race in South Africa and the recurrent place of racial representation within the works of a generation of photographers, which grew up “after” Apartheid.
