Have global value chains shaped sustainability? If so, how?
This project explores tension between the meaning and practices of ‘sustainability’ in food production involving global value chains. I am particularly interested in investigating the power of corporate narratives in shaping rules and norms: until recently, the food sustainability governance landscape has predominantly involved voluntary standards and certifications, rather than national or international law. I seek to develop a genealogy of how such standards might echo into incoming EU legislation that addresses sustainable production in global value chains, including the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive and the Deforestation Regulation.
