Non-confrontational yet radical climate activism?: global environmental publics within and beyond Singapore

My project examines how climate justice movements in democratically-limited contexts can enact radicality without relying on confrontational or disruptive tactics common in Western radical environmental movements. It examines the Singapore Climate Rally (SGCR), a local climate justice campaign, and its efforts to reshape the scales of climate responsibility and expand the epistemic boundaries of climate discourses. By studying how SGCR resists the Singaporean government’s depoliticised approach to climate governance, I argue that radicality can be advanced through the constitution of new political subjectivities, including those that emplace human agents within a “global environmental public”.
