Identity, Encounter and the French East India Company

My thesis will explore how space was contested, experienced and regulated in the towns of the French East India Company in the first half of the eighteenth century. Looking at Pondicherry (Puducherry), Chandernagore (Chandannagar), and Mahé , I am particularly interested in how space can be used to think about the colonial encounter, and how we can use space to think about the identities of these towns’ inhabitants.
