Beyond Return: The Problem of Painting, 1956-1966
My current research focuses on the so-called “problem” of painting during the mid-twentieth century, a time in which the medium was subjected to constant practical and theoretical scrutiny and disrepute. Reconsidering the fall-out of this historical moment, my thesis proposes a set of case studies which complicate and ultimately call into question its supposed demise and consequent return. What might it have meant to carry on painting despite, or perhaps precisely because of, its questioned status? And what may have been at stake, beyond painting itself?
