Singing Trás-os-Montes: Reembodying Rural Singing Practices
This PhD aims to produce an artistic body of work examining and re-performing the disappearing singing practices of the Portuguese region of Trás-os-Montes, in collaboration with its residents. These songs, and the performance of collective singing, reflect the sustainability and communitarianism of a pre-modern agricultural society, capturing differing notions of ‘the body’, ‘community’, and ‘death’. By creatively reworking this region’s traditional songs, leaning on these themes, this project aims to create artwork that critically reflects on the precarious future of Trás-os-Montes and rural communities more broadly, thereby offering an alternative vision for this future.
