Fairness & Competition in International Trade
International trade is competitive, inevitably creating winners and losers. Yet, when poorer countries lose due to the trade practices of richer states, they often claim unfairness. My research examines this apparent contradiction: if trade is a competition, why do some losses seem unjust? Existing accounts focus on economic efficiency or global welfare, but I argue that fairness must be assessed through the structure of competition itself. Drawing on sports ethics, I develop a new framework for evaluating trade fairness—identifying when competitive moves violate the norms of the game—offering a novel approach with real-world implications on trade law and policy.
