British Film Institute

he British Film Institute (BFI) is the UK’s lead body in the preservation and promotion of film and filmmaking. In short, our subject is the art, history and impact of film—where “film” signifies fictional, factual or artistic moving image works crafted to express ideas, evoke emotions, communicate messages or tell stories––regardless of production process, recording medium or distribution channel. In other words, “film” includes all forms of the moving image, such as television, interactive media, and videogames.

The BFI develops, cares for, and interprets a collection that illustrates the art, history and impact of film, as defined, to be held in perpetuity for the public, for their use and for use by the BFI in pursuit of its objectives. The collection includes feature films, documentary and factual films, television programmes, artists’ film, books, journals, festival catalogues, photographs, audio recordings, scripts, designs, press campaign books, posters and the papers of individuals and organisations. It is one of the world’s largest film archives and is of significant importance to the global academic community. It also places the BFI at the very heart of the UK’s cultural environment.

OPEN TO PLACEMENT PROPOSALS FROM LAHP STUDENTS AND SUPERVISORS

Yes

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS FOR PLACEMENT PROPOSALS

As resources are very much stretched at the moment, we would only be able to support a placement where it matches a priority area for us. Students and supervisors can contact our Head of Academic Partnerships in the first instance who can check with colleagues as to whether the proposal has the potential for co-development.

AREAS/DEPARTMENTS OPEN TO PLACEMENT PROPOSALS

The BFI’s National Archive would be open to placements, covering collections and curation. These teams are responsible for maintaining, developing and explaining the BFI’s collections. The unit is divided into five teams: fiction film and television, non-fiction film and television, special collections, archive projects and curatorial archivists.
