The ethics of writing about Art
When: 9:30 – 12:30, Wednesday, 13th May 2026
Where: Room 101, Gordon Square (20), UCL, London WC1H 0AW
A workshop that considers the ethics of writing about visual art. It will start by considering these provocations: Who holds the authority to write about another individual’s work? · In what ways do race, gender, class, and access influence the process of evaluation? · What obligations arise as a result of the platform held by the critic or art historian? · How can a consideration of these issues impact on my own practice? Is it possible for analysis to ever be impartial?
This workshop has been designed to build upon issues were addressed at an initial stage as part of the LAHP study day on practice research on 12 February. That day had to cover a wide range of issues, however, and therefore could not dedicate sufficient time to engage deeply, or through the participants’ own practice, the questions to be addressed in this workshop. The workshop will therefore complement and extend the central training offered by LAHP in the areas of critical writing and ethical engagement with creative practices.
Refreshments will be served from 9:00
