The Development of Domestic Architecture in Britain and Ireland, 4000-1000 BC

Analysis of monumental architecture has dominated studies of the built environment in Neolithic and Bronze Age Britain and Ireland, whereas the study of domestic architecture has been far more limited. My research aims to redress this balance, providing a synthesis of the evidence available from excavated houses in order to elucidate regional and chronological trends in domestic architecture during this period. I will consider how changes in the construction and use of houses (particularly the change from rectilinear to circular structures) might relate to wider aspects of daily life in the Neolithic and Bronze Age, as well as exploring connections between monumental forms and domestic architecture.
