The independent podcasts in Vietnam: motivations, production and distribution by young media creators in the podcast boom era

This study explores (1) the overview and context of the podcast boom; (2) the reasons why this is the boom time of podcasts in recent years; (3) the potential of independent podcasts in Vietnam; (4) investigating motivations and independent podcasting production by young (non-professional) media creators from a participatory media perspective. In an era of podcast platformization and monetization, it also involves (5) assessing young podcasters’ production & distribution conditions and their use of social media platforms to establish listening communities.

Using mixed methods, the research collects and analyses both qualitative and quantitative data through a national online survey (n=400) with young media creators (aged 18-25) in 2 FB groups as the most significant communities for podcasters in this nation and through in-depth interviews with independent podcasters & podcast experts (n=30).

This research contributes an important voice from a Global South country that is considerably lacking in the current literature on this topic. Emerging issues during the implementation process of young Vietnamese podcasters will be discussed and considered for other contexts.
