Securing Invention: International Law and the History of Technology

Anna’s PhD research examines international legal practices and frameworks governing the distribution of technology in international society, their relationship to historical and social transformations, and their significance for the contemporary world. The project traces these practices and frameworks from the creation of international legal instruments governing patent rights in the late nineteenth century through to the present. It explores the interconnections between struggles over the internationalisation of the patent form and the limits to which it might be subject, the generation of legal ideas of security and the role of the state, and how these ideas might be reimagined in the era of climate change.
