Vocal aesthetic practices in Muslim communities in Germany

My PhD project looks at the intersecting dimensions of sound, aesthetics and ethics in the vocal practices of Qur’anic recitation and Nasheed traditions. In an ethnographic study, I examine ideas about the voice and the self within the frameworks of sound studies and an anthropology of ethics. Sunni communities in Berlin are the main geographical focus of my field research. In a broader sense, this anthropological account contributes to research on European Muslims.
