‘(K)not a symptom: on Rosemarie Trockel, drawing and psychoanalysis’
In my PhD I focus on drawing as foundational yet multivalent medium in the work of contemporary German artist Rosemarie Trockel. I investigate how the artist in drawing not only undermines traditional distinctions between media, but tackles historical notions of creativity. I focus especially on how the artist challenges psychoanalysis as one of the disciplines and discourses that has significantly s interpretations of drawing as ‘symptom’ and (gendered) notions of creativity in the arts of 20th century Germany and Europe. All the while, I hold that a dialogue with psychoanalysis may prove particularly useful to explore the polylogic instrument of drawing that has been key to the artist’s idiosyncratic practice since the late 1970s.
