Archiving 1971: contemporary circulations of photography from the Bangladesh Liberation War

This project investigates the circulations of photographic images from Bangladesh’s 1971 Liberation War. Through an ethnographic exploration of contemporary archival practices, as well as of museological display strategies in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, I am interested in the work being done with images, as well as the work being done by images, in relation to the collective memory of the Liberation War. In doing so, I trace the life-journeys of photographs from 1971, from the moment of the photographic event and its technomaterial conditions, through to the images’ initial publication, and subsequently on to their archiving and (re)circulation in the present day.
