Self-construction in the Journal of Keith Vaughan

This archive-based research project undertakes a critical reading of the journal of British painter Keith Vaughan (1912-77), written over a period of almost forty years and consisting of sixty-one volumes. Beginning with his wartime writing on conscientious objection, this reading reveals how Vaughan constructed his identity as an outsider whose political ambivalence, artistic sensibilities, and illegal homosexuality distanced and distinguished him from British society.
