Censorship of online research journals in China
Since 2017, academic publishers have faced demands to censor online journal articles on politically sensitive topics in China. In a widely reported case concerning Cambridge University Press, over 300 articles were removed from the online version of a prominent Asia Studies journal, China Quarterly, at the request of research importers, containing terms such as ’Tiananmen,’ ‘Taiwan,’ ‘Hong Kong,’ ‘Xinjiang,’ ‘Uighur,’ and ‘Falun Gong.’
