Individual Allyship and Institutional Complicity in the Realm of Decolonial Initiatives in the British Arts Sector
This project investigates the figure of the ally in the context of decolonial initiatives in the British art world. In what could be defined as ‘decolonial turn’ within an overwhelmingly white sector, the role of the ally is crucial to understand how museums reckon with their (past and ongoing) participation in the colonial project. The study examines how such contradictions unfold at an individual level through qualitative research conducted with members of staff within a sample of London-based art institutions, to uncover participants’ self-understandings and the relationship between their values and the stances occupied by their institutions of belonging.
