Reconciling systematic compositional strategies, extemporization and indeterminacy

Under the supervision of composer George Benjamin I am working on a portfolio of compositions for varied ensemble types that will engage will the considerations of systematic compositional formalization, improvisatory compositional practice and forms of indeterminate and standard notation. I hope to reconcile, within my own practice, these aspects of composition that have traditionally been considered distinct and potentially incompatible in various composer’s practices throughout the 20th and 21st centuries.
