"The Desert as a Space of Life: Landscape, Climate, Decolonisation and the Moving Image "
My research will produce an interdisciplinary study of moving image that uses desert environments in Israel-Palestine after the Second World War, unearthing traces of a synergy between film, climate, people, state and soil. Working with an understanding of the desert as a central setting for the fabrication of colonial desires, it will employ a postcolonial perspective to read the desert as a counter-space of settler colonialism, proposing the desert as ‘a space of life’; a landscape in which traces can be discerned of new or hitherto invisible geopolitical and social relations, representations of loss, migration, memory, and liminal subjectivities.
