The Experience of Money in Contemporary Chinese Cinema

This is the first research project to focus on the experience of money in contemporary Chinese cinema. This research studies the cultural significances, narrative functions and affective qualities of money in Chinese films since 1978. My hypothesis is that the experience of money is becoming central to the (trans)formation of Chinese contemporary subjectivity. I would investigate this hypothesis in five core chapters, which study the experience of becoming rich (Ch.1) and being poor (Ch.2), the experience of money through the dimensions of space (Ch. 3) and time (Ch. 4), and experience of money in Chinese blockbusters and mass culture (Ch.5).
